Three key adjectives: Noble, self-sacrificing, stubborn

Influential Events:

4F rejection letters:
When World War II breaks out, Steve applies to join the war like any other able man his age. However, due to his poor health and overall fragility, he's been rejected multiple times. This is important in setting Steve's character for multiple reasons. For one, it shows how determined he is when he has a goal, especially if it's one that he considers to be important. In this case, fighting off the Axis Powers is such a scenario.

That determination can make him be unflinchingly stubborn at times too. Even if the other person has good intentions for him, such as the doctor stamping 4F on his records because he knows that Steve would most likely get killed, he still wants to reach his goal. The fact that he's even trying multiple times is illegal, since he's using different locations for each attempt. Steve's the type to usually follow the law, until it becomes either corrupt or a hindrance to him, then he's more than willing to break it to get the job done. He's just a guy that has a hard time giving up or backing down, no matter what the danger or consequence may be (of course there are some limits to this, as he won't recklessly endanger innocents or anyone else. Just himself is fair game).

And while he mostly wants to join the war for noble reasons, Steve also wants to show that he's just like any other guy. He wants to prove that he can fight; he doesn't want to be looked down upon or pick up scraps and pull them around in a red wagon. Basically, he doesn't want to be given jobs that little kids would have. Steve feels like he has no right to do any less than people his age.

Meeting Dr. Erskine:
It's Steve's determination and multiple tries at signing up for WWII that catches Dr. Erskine's attention, a German scientist that fled his country. It's during this encounter that Erskine tells Steve that he's willing to give him a chance and he immediately accepts the offer. With this, Steve is officially enlisted in the US Army.

But before any of this happens, Erskine gives Steve a simple 'test,' asking him if he 'wants to kill Nazis.'

Steve's answer basically exemplifies one of his core traits and why Erskine picks him for the serum. He basically says that 'he doesn't want to kill anyone. He doesn't like bullies,' which is true. For all of his stubborn behavior and willingness to break the law, Steve in the end wants to protect others and stop injustice. He wants to stop bullies that would bring harm to those around them. He's lived his entire life dealing with people that hurt him just for being small or whenever Steve opens his mouth to stand up to them, which occurs often. He hates injustice and he understands what it's like to be at the end of it, so it helps Steve relate to the 'little' guy a lot.

What's most important is that he isn't joining the war to gun down people, he wants to protect the soldier next to him. Of course this doesn't mean that Steve can't kill people, he'd just rather avoid it when possible.

Jumping on the grenade:
During his training as a soldier, Colonel Philips throws a dummy grenade at his group while they were exercising. Instead of moving away like everyone else, Steve elects to jump on the fake grenade and curl around it, hoping that his body takes the explosion while saving everyone else around him. This action basically cements Erskine's decision to choose Steve for the super soldier program and even gets the colonel on board.

Furthermore, this shows that Steve is completely self-sacrificing. Obviously he'll exchange his life for a group of soldiers, but it's easy to assume that he'd still give his up for just one person. He never thinks his life is more important than anyone's, hence his mindset. He doesn't even hesitate for a moment before covering the grenade with his body, fully expecting to die but ready for it as well. Steve even shouts at others to get back while he's on the grenade. In a way, he can be fearless when it comes to protecting others and this attitude isn't born from a desire to be a hero or anything like that. Steve genuinely wants to protect others.

Although, this shows that he can be reckless at times. Sometimes he doesn't think everything through, especially if he's running off his basic instinct to keep others from dying.

Learning about the serum from Erskine:
The night before the super soldier serum procedure, Erskine talks to Steve about the serum and how it affected a man known as Johann Schmidt. Schmidt forced Erskine to give him the serum and he later injected it in his blood, causing him to get stronger but also mutate his face in the process. While Erskine admits that the serum wasn't ready, he emphasized the fact that the man was not ready. Because Schmidt always knew power and abused it to harm others, the serum affected him in a negative manner.

Erskine explains that bad becomes worse, but good becomes great and he considers Steve to be that good man. In fact, he makes Steve promise him to be a good man, not a perfect soldier, which is something that he takes to heart. While Steve always tries to be a good man, it's a promise that he keeps close to him, especially when Erskine later dies at the hands of a HYDRA agent. He doesn't want to be a perfect soldier that blindly follows orders and a lot of his later actions show Steve directly disobeying commands from the higher up to do what's right to him.

Another point that Erskine makes is that a weak man knows the value of strength, and knows compassion. Steve's never the type to let power get to his head; he truly understands what strength should be used for.

Chosen path: Fighter
5 Abilities:

-Athletics
-Improvised Weapon
-Rustic Hospitality
-Second Wind
-Find Steed

Why this path?:

Steve's always been a fighter, someone that stands up to opposition no matter how outmatched he is. And in the future, with the super soldier serum, he's able to fight back against most of those enemies. However, since he doesn't get the chance to go through the procedure, such a path is not going to be available to him. He's not going to become Captain America, the super soldier.

However, I still want to give him abilities that are similar to his alter ego, such as increased strength and knowing how to use multiple weapons. Some of the other attributes also fit him well personality wise, such as Second Wind and Rustic Hospitality. He's one to get back up after getting punched and a lot of people are drawn to him, well, at least when he's Captain America.

My intent for Fighter was to choose a class that is not only similar to him in terms of personality, but to also give small Steve a chance to live up to Captain America. And while he might not be able to fully match the Living Legend, he's going to do his best regardless.
